Listen to this blog post:
Do you ever find yourself sitting by your desk with a whopping great to do list, not feeling on top of your game and procrastinating on certain jobs on your list (perhaps having a sneaky look at Facebook!)? You know what you should be doing and then you still start working on something else!
I’ve certainly done this plenty of times and, though I try to avoid it, I still find myself in that situation now and then.
But there is a way that you can help focus your mind and kick start your determination to get stuff done…
Have you ever heard of the book ‘Will It Make the Boat Go Faster?‘ -It’s written by Olympic gold medal winners Harriet Beveridge and Ben Hunt-Davis and the essence is that the only way that you can get where you want to go is if you focus on the end goal and with everything that you do, ask yourself ‘Will it make the boat go faster’ – in your case we’re talking about your business.
Will what you’re doing RIGHT NOW going to make you business better and get where you want to be?
You need to be answering YES to this question if you want to achieve your goals for your business.
And of course you also need to have a clear vision of where you want to be, what you want to achieve in your business to be able to work towards it.
You can see mixed advice on about goal setting (some love it, some don’t) but you wouldn’t be able to win a gold medal or run a marathon if you didn’t have a goal to do so. Nor would you do either of these things if you not only had a goal but also had a plan to get there.
Imagine signing up for a marathon and then expecting to get the fastest time without doing any structured training. It’s just not going to happen.
The only way you’re going to cross the line first is to work out a plan of action that will give you what you need to make that happen.
In the case of running we’re talking stamina, fitness and experience, among others, and of course a big dose of determination. For your business, you need to ask yourself what do you need to be able to achieve your goal?
Is it more clients, more money, a bigger premises, a mix of the above…. or something else?
You need to decide on what you want first and then you can create a plan that will help you get there.
Once you have both of these in place you will be able to ask yourself ‘Will it make the boat go faster?’ and know the exact answer – if it’s a no then you will have all the reason you need to switch your focus and go for gold.
So… is what you’re doing currently with your business making your boat go faster… or have you not even left the harbour yet?
